Venus in the Kitchen or Love&Apos;S Cookery Book
London, William Heinemann Ltd , 1952. First edition. Cloth. The first edition of this collection of aphrodisiac recipes, written by Giuseppe Orioli and Norman Douglas. First edition, first impression. In the publisher's original red cloth binding. Published under the pseudonym Pilaff Bey, this cook book comprises aphrodisiac recipes, written by Florentine bookseller Giuseppe Orioli and British writer Norman Douglas. Orioli is best known for privately publishing the unexpurgated first edition of 'Lady Chatterley's Lover', as well as his long association with Norman Douglas. Recipes include black risotto, potted lobster, brain of veal, testicles of lamb and sweetbreads with mushrooms, among others. From the library of Jill Norman, an editor and food writer. Norman began working at Penguin in the early 1960s and, as the only woman, the care of the company's cookery books fell to her. It was her responsibility to expand the cookery titles Penguin produced, and thus began to publish works by Jane Grigson, Claudia Roden, and Alan Davidson. In particular Norman worked closely with the famed cookery writer Elizabeth David, with whom she was good friends. In the original cloth binding. Externally, very smart. With slight rubbing and bumping to the extremities and fading to the spine. Internally, firmly bound with bright and clean pages. Bookplate of Jill Norman to the front free endpaper. Norman Douglas, Alone
Norman Douglas
Alone
London, Chapman and Hall , 1921. First edition. Cloth. A lovely and scarce first edition copy of this travel work on Italy by Norman Douglas. The first edition of this work, a scarce volume. Although Norma Douglas was best known for his novel South WInd, it can be argued that some of his best works were his travel book, which not only documented new experiences with insight and humour, but also were written in a very charming prose. Alone is one of those books, recollecting travels through Italy.  In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally very smart with only minor shelfwear and slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine. The cloth to the spine has slightly faded. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are generally clean throughout with some slight tone ageing, as usual due to the type of paper used. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: None. Very Good Indeed .
